We’ve all been there – waking up with a headache, feeling sick and wondering how much alcohol we actually consumed. A hangover is no fun, but there are things you can do to make it more bearable.
First, hydrate. Drinking water is the best hangover treatment, as alcohol causes dehydration. Sip water with a slice of lemon to help settle your stomach.
Eat a meal that includes protein. Eggs are a popular choice as they contain an amino acid that breaks down acetaldehyde – a toxin that causes the worst hangover symptoms.
Take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug NSAID for headache or body aches. Do not take acetaminophen Tylenol as it can cause liver damage when combined with alcohol.
Avoid caffeine. While a cup of coffee may seem like a good idea, it can actually dehydrate you further. Stick to water or sports drinks.
If you’re feeling nauseous, try ginger tea or peppermint tea. Both have anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe an upset stomach.
Of course, the best hangover treatment is prevention. Drink in moderation, eat a meal beforehand and alternate alcoholic drinks with water.
Hangovers are not fun, but they’re also not permanent. Try these tips and you’ll hopefully feel better soon.
